A year after the new G35 sedan was introduced, Infiniti is introducing an all-new G37 Coupe.
The 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe is almost identical dimensionally to the previous-generation G35 Coupe, although the rear-drive platform has been stiffened and it has a slightly wider track.
The body is similar but with more sweeping lines and rounder corners and L-shaped bi-xenon headlights that blend in well with the new design.
The front multi-link suspension has been modified, although it is identical to the 2007 G35 sedan, which received the same improvements. The rear suspension continues unchanged with a multi-link setup.
It's under the hood where the biggest difference occurs.
The G37 gets an all-new 3.7-liter V6 engine with Variable Valve Event and Lift (VVEL) intake camshafts that help the engine deliver 330 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. This is an increase of 24 horsepower compared to the G35 sedan. Yet, according to Infiniti it should deliver one or two more miles per gallon in fuel economy compared to the G35 sedan or the last generation G35 Coupe.
The G37 Coupe comes standard with a five-speed automatic transmission with downshift rev matching and a quick-shift DS mode. For those who want to do their own shifting there is an optional six-speed close-ratio manual transmission.
A new option is 4-Wheel Active Steer. Dubbed 4WAS, it adjusts the geometry of the rear suspension according to steering input and vehicle speed. The electronic system calculates the desired vehicle dynamics from a series of sensors. Actuators then move the rear suspension lower links into an optimum position for more agile handling.
The interior of the new G37 is almost identical to that of the G35 sedan, which is not a bad thing as it features a sweeping dashboard that wraps around into the door trim to form a snug cockpit. All G37 Coupes come with a large LCD monitor for displaying information.
Options include a touch screen navigation system with XM NavTraffic real-time traffic reporting, a rearview camera, and an 11-speaker Infiniti Studio on Wheels audio system by Bose with 24-bit Burr Brown DAC, 3-way door speaker arrays with 10-inch woofers and a 9.3-gigabyte Music Box hard drive.
