2006 Pontiac Torrent

By Michelle Krebs

On Sale: Fall 2005
Expected Pricing: $23,000 to $26,000

Pontiac will introduce what it calls its first "true" sport utility when the 2006 Pontiac Torrent goes on sale in fall 2005. Pontiac Torrent is based on the new 2005 Chevrolet Equinox, which borrows heavily from the Saturn Vue's architecture. The Torrent, like the Equinox, will compete against the Ford Escape, the volume leader among compact sport utilities, as well as the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. GM boasts the Equinox, and subsequently the Torrent, have the longest wheelbase in the class for the roomiest interior. The Torrent will sport Pontiac styling cues, including an athletic stance, double kidney grille and slightly slanted headlamps. The Torrent's suspension will feature tuning different from that of the Equinox, in keeping with Pontiac's reputation for spirited driving dynamics. Available in front- or all-wheel-drive, The Torrent will be powered by the same 185-horsepower, twin cam, 3.4-liter V6 engine, rated at 210 pound-feet of torque and built in China for use in the Equinox. It is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. It can come as front-wheel drive or with the on-demand all-wheel-drive system, which delivers power to the front wheels during normal driving conditions but transfers power to the rear wheels if front wheel slippage is detected. The system is designed for on-road traction more than off-road capability. Inside, the Torrent features a rear seat that moves nearly eight inches forward or back and reclining seatbacks. With the seat far forward, the sport utility offers 68.6 cubic feet of cargo space. With seats pushed back, rear-seat passengers enjoy extra legroom. The Torrent replaces the Aztek, controversial for its styling. Pricing won't be announced until closer to the introduction date but it can be expected that its pricing will be a step from the Equinox, which has base prices starting at $22,000 to $25,000 depending on the model.
