2015 NCTD Truck of the Year
The votes have not been tallied and we will not know what vehicle has been awarded 2015 North American Truck/Utility of the Year until it is announced January 12.
However, we can tell you we voted for the 2015 Ford F-150.
GM had a strong entry in the form of its Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickups.
But in the end, we went for the F-150. The reason is its impressive weight reduction. Until recently, manufacturers have not concerned themselves with the weight of their vehicles, but the demand for better fuel economy has driven some of them to focus on weight. Adding lightness to a vehicle has many advantages.
After shedding nearly 700 pounds, the 2015 Ford F-150 offers improved fuel efficiency, stronger acceleration and shorter braking distances. It feels lighter and more agile than the other trucks in its class. Its payload and tow ratings are at or near the top of the class. Previously among the heaviest pickups in its class, the 2015 F-150 is now among the lightest. The 2015 Ford F-150 brings more sophistication and refinement to a strong field of full-size trucks.
Ford took a risk with this strategy. It was innovative. It was expensive. Buyers might be wary of aluminum. But the lightweight metal has proven its mettle since the 1950s.
Ford’s innovation paid off. That’s why we voted for the 2015 Ford F-150 for North American Truck of the Year. We shall see if the other nearly 60 automotive journalists agree with us.
